Conversion action sanity check
When to use. At the start of every audit, before judging any performance numbers.
What to export. Goals > Conversions > Summary. Copy or download the conversion actions table with: conversion action name, source, tracking status, action optimization (Primary or Secondary), Count (One or Every), click-through conversion window, conversions and all conversions. (Some accounts also have Goals > Conversions > All conversions, a single table of every action; it's rolling out gradually.)
Prompt
You are auditing conversion tracking in a Google Ads account for a [business type, e.g. B2B lead gen / ecommerce]. The real business outcomes are: [list, e.g. qualified lead form, purchase, booked call]. Below is the conversion actions table. Columns: name, source, tracking status, action optimization (Primary/Secondary), Count (One/Every), click-through window, Conversions, All conv. [paste table] Using only this data: 1. Flag Primary actions that are not real business outcomes (e.g. page views, scroll, micro-events). 2. Flag real outcomes that are set to Secondary. 3. Flag likely duplicates (two actions that probably measure the same event). 4. Flag Count settings that look wrong: lead actions set to "Every", purchase actions set to "One". 5. Flag tracking statuses other than recording conversions. Give a table: action, issue, why it matters, suggested fix. Say "not enough data" instead of guessing.
What to check in the answer. Google Ads Help says Primary actions are reported in the Conversions column and used for bidding (when their goal is used for bidding), while Secondary actions are observation-only in All conv., except inside a custom goal. Make sure the AI doesn't claim a Secondary action drives bidding unless a custom goal is involved. Confirm any "duplicate" by checking where each tag fires before you change anything.
